HBCU Superheroes is an original 3D animated short that celebrates the legacy and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Orban Forest directed an international team of artists, animators, and voice actors to transform a bold creative vision into a cinematic experience — from character concept to final render.
The client had a powerful concept: superheroes rooted in the traditions, pride, and resilience of HBCU culture. But turning that idea into a polished 3D animated short meant coordinating artists, modelers, riggers, and animators spread across four countries — each working on interconnected pieces of a tightly unified creative vision.
The challenge went beyond technical animation. Every character needed to authentically represent HBCU heritage — from wardrobe details referencing real university traditions to personality traits shaped by the values those institutions cultivate. Getting any of it wrong would undermine the entire project's purpose.
We served as creative directors on the project, building the pipeline that connected concept artists in one timezone to 3D modelers in another and animators in a third. Every asset was guided by detailed character bibles, style guides, and weekly review sessions that kept quality consistent across the entire production.
The finished animated short delivered exactly what the client envisioned — a celebration of HBCU culture told through original superhero characters that audiences connected with immediately. The project demonstrated that culturally specific storytelling, paired with high production values, resonates far beyond its target audience.
